Hey there, it’s been a little while.
On Friday 15th December I said I would be taking 4 weeks off to “take stock of the role I want this newsletter to play in my career going forward”. After a few too many pigs in blankets, a jetlagged reset of the body clock and a sunny adventure to Florida for Christmas I think I’ve found my answer…
I want this newly renamed newsletter So What Do You Do? to be a collection log of how individuals with many interests (“multipotentialites”) earn through more than one income stream (“portfolio work”), while navigating careers without obvious progression pathways (“squiggly careers”).
Because together I believe this WHO, WHAT and WHERE defines the future of careers for Gen Z. So, through personal experience, interviews and research I’ve made it my mission to learn, document and explain how each of us can thrive in this new, constantly changing world of work.
The Content Changes
This new direction means there’ll be a few changes coming to the content you can expect from over the coming months…
I’ll still be posting on Fridays at 6am. But this time round I’ll be landing in your inbox on a fortnightly, rather than weekly basis. Sometimes I might throw in the occasional back-to-back week to throw you off. But, don’t expect it.
Meaning you’ll be receiving:
🎤 Interviews - the stories, challenges and lessons from my interviews with individuals who live and breathe the new model of careers.
🔨 Principles - the practical themes I identify across my interviews, research and personal experience that you can implement into your own career.
📖 Diaries - the reflections on my own career milestones as I implement my own advice first-hand and share the results with you.
Every post will be available to all of the 800+ free subscribers who decide to read So, What Do You Do? There will be no paywall. And I’m turning comments on for every single post going forward (exciting times!). That way this journey can be a two-way dialogue with each of you.
As for any existing paid subscribers, I will be continuing to pause any payments from you until I work out a better way to reward your commitment to me and my writing. If you still appreciate what I write and want to show your support, then sharing the newsletter would make a huge difference.
So, What Do I Do?
Good question. Here’s my current answer…
I do a few things. All focused on the future of careers.
Specifically, I work four days a week as a Founders Associate at The Portfolio Collective where we help 10,000+ members create thriving portfolio careers, earning through more than one source of income.
On my 5th, 6th and 7th day I also build the Undefinable Community, a collection of 40+ multipotentialites who see themselves as more than just their occupational label and come together to collectively empower each individual’s creativity, authenticity and capability. We do wholesome weekend retreats, co-working days and monthly reflections. It’s pretty cool.
And I share everything I learn about all the people I meet and my own experiences through public speaking for organisations, creating content for my 10k LinkedIn followers and writing a newsletter called “So, What Do You Do?” to my 800+ weekly readers.
All while juggling my career as an endurance athlete, where I placed 33/1115 at Ironman UK and 396/3935 at Ironman 70.3 World Champions in 2023 and am currently training to go sub 2h 30m at the London Marathon in April 2024.
In short, I believe I’m living the future of careers. And I want to help you do the same. By empowering you with the frameworks, skills and mental models to succeed as an individual with many interests.
It’s probably pretty clear by now that I’ve spent the last 12 months or so really getting to grips with my answer to this age old question. It’s not perfect. And it’ll keep changing. But, I feel it more accurately represents the whole me.
However, I am only one person with only one career and there are many more out there. So, as one of the over 800 of you who read this newsletter I’d love to learn your answer to “So, What Do You Do?” in the comments below.
If you ever want to chat to a 51 year old Australian who has lived and breathed a version of the multipotentialite /portfolio work/ squiggly career life for over 20 years, please sing out ☺️
Well this is exciting! I just subscribed but I’m looking forward to it :)
