In truth, the Ironman 70.3 World Championships had always been an afterthought. When I qualified back in September 2022 I knew that my main priority for the season was the deferred full-distance Ironman UK.
In the 12 months since that’s never really changed.
My eyes were set on becoming an Ironman. And all my training, nutrition and mental preparation was laser focused on the one race. Yes, there were sideshows of running personal bests. But, that’s all they were: sideshows.
So, once I finally did cross the finish line back at the start of July, nothing in my body wanted to even consider the event I’d been pushing to the back of my mind that now loomed over me with less than 8 weeks to go.
I was exhausted. Both mentally and physically.
And I wanted nothing more than to simply enjoy the Summer, spend time with friends and live a little less structured for once.
But, the show had to go on.
I was lifting the highest, cycling the furthest and running the fastest ever in my life and I knew now was the perfect opportunity for a personal best.
So, I dug deep, built back up the 15 hour a week training rhythm and committed myself to seeing the triathlon season through till the very end.
What followed exceeded all my expectations…
